Symphony in the Flint Hills (SFH) Prairie Art Exhibit &
Auction is a juried art exhibition showcasing the Kansas Flint
Hills.
Submitted artworks must thematically or graphically reference the
Flint Hills of Kansas. SFH’s mission statement is to “heighten appreciation and
knowledge of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie.” Art submitted should reflect
an artist’s passion and inspiration for the Flint Hills. Diversity in artists
and artwork is encouraged. The exhibit and online auction will run from Saturday,
April 26, 2025, until 7 pm, Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The exhibit location is
Symphony in the Flint Hills Gallery, 331 Broadway, Cottonwood Falls, KS.
Artwork
Requirements
Entry fee is $25.
Artists are eligible to submit up to two (2) entries each. All
artwork must be ready for display and created within the past two years,
without exception. Framed art must have a professional appearance, be high quality, and be well-executed.
All
original works will be considered, including painting, drawing, photography,
printmaking, original watercolor, fabric, 3D sculpture and mixed media.
Professional presentation of accepted artwork is required. 2D artwork shall be professionally
framed or gallery-wrapped canvas with fully painted edges and suitable for
hanging. As mentioned above, art should reflect an artist’s passion and
inspiration for the Flint Hills of Kansas. Images must be submitted as a JPG image, not less than 300 dpi.
Artist
Statement & Biography
A well
written artist statement and biography is encouraged, explaining the artist’s
connection to the Flint Hills through their artwork. Artist bio should be
written in third person, (he, him, his, himself, she, her, hers, herself, they,
them, theirs, themselves) and not longer than 50 words. Artist statement should
be written in first person, (I, me, mine, myself) and not longer than 100
words.
Important Dates for Artists:
Submission Deadline:Monday, February 24, 2025, by 11:59 PM
Artist Notification:Thursday, March 6, 2025 – Emails will be sent to inform artists if their artwork has been accepted or not accepted for the show.
Artwork Delivery (Accepted Work Only): Friday, March 7, 2025, to Thursday, March 27, 2025 – Deliver accepted artwork to Symphony in the Flint Hills Gallery, 331 Broadway, Cottonwood Falls.
Exhibition Opening: Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 1 PM – Symphony in the Flint Hills Gallery.
Exhibition Dates: Saturday, April 26, 2025, to Tuesday, June 17, 2025 – View the exhibit in person at Symphony in the Flint Hills Gallery.
Bidding: Bidding for artwork will be open online at symphonyintheflinthills.org or kcauctioncompany.com during the exhibition dates (April 26 – June 17).
Pricing
Art sales benefit Symphony in the Flint Hills, whose mission
statement is to heighten appreciation and knowledge of the Flint Hills
tallgrass prairie. All artwork selected must be eligible for online
auction. Artists set a beginning bid price; this will be the starting price for
the online auction. Artists will receive half (50%) of the total auction price
if sold. Each artist with selected entry/ies is offered two free general
admission tickets to SFH’s Signature Event on Saturday, June 14, 2025. A winning
art piece will be chosen by the juror and the winning artist will be awarded
$300.
Rights & Responsibilities
Right
to Reproduce Image for Purpose or Promotion, Resale, and Publicity: SFH
reserves the right to reproduce images for the purpose of publicity and
promotion in the form of posters, informational handouts, and social media
posts. By submitting artwork to this exhibition, each artist agrees to this
statement.
Liability
and Responsibilities: Artists retain liability for accepted artwork. SFH assumes
no liability for the artwork submitted whether in transit or during its
housing. By submitting artwork to this event, each artist agrees to this
statement.
2025
Prairie Art Juror – Diana Werts
Diana Werts completed her MA degree in Painting at
Emporia State University, in the heart of the Flint Hills. Teaching in various
settings, from art museums and schools to artist-in-residencies throughout
Kansas and Missouri, deepened her appreciation for the relationships between
people and the natural world. Working in small rural communities allowed Diana
to explore and examine her region with an artist’s eye, while engaging people
of all ages in the artistic process. After living in the
Kansas City Metro area for 30 years, she has taken up residence in Matfield
Green where she can experience the ever-changing Kansas prairie that is an
integral part of her art practice. With over 30 years of exhibiting, Diana’s
work is included in many private and corporate collections and she is
represented by Strecker Nelson West Gallery in Manhattan, KS.
